Steve Sutton, LPC

With 14 years of experience as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Steve has provided mental health therapy to children, adolescents, adults, couples and families in a range of settings in both public and private sectors that includes institutional, group home, community agency, school,  professional office, phone and in-home. This work included experience in multiple levels of therapeutic care and modes of intervention that ranged from crisis to supportive.

Early on, Steve’s graduate internship at the Job Corps involved a variety of individual student counseling as well as group therapy for career guidance for males and trauma processing for young females. Upon earning his master’s in counseling, he went on to work closely with at-risk adolescents and their families as the family counselor in a multi-county group home, in western North Carolina, stabilizing, teaching and strengthening them while supervising staff.

In Florida, he served in the psychology department of a dual adult/juvenile correctional institution, where he helped individuals not only cope with the various realities of their environmental situation but also find greater meaning through self-awareness and exploration.  Later he provided in-home and in-school therapy to both rural and urban children and families, gaining an intimate understanding of real-time parent-child dynamics, environmental and cultural influences and the importance of presence in relationships and positive change.

Since 2004, Steve has resided in Raleigh, NC, where first he spent time doing work in the corporate managed-healthcare industry, facilitating comprehensive functions for a broad spectrum of therapeutic requests, reviews and decision-making regarding mental health services, including telephonic crisis-counseling and advising for patients and mental health providers.  Subsequently working in mental health agencies, he extended his experience developing positive therapeutic relationships with adolescents and their families, also expanding to more time with individual adult clientele.

Steve then transitioned exclusively into private practice, since 2012, where he has sought to help a wide variety of clients presenting diverse issues, including adults, couples, children and families. He integrates his prior skills and experience into his own person-centered and solution-focused approaches to therapy that includes both mindfulness and heart-centered foundations. His emphasis is on working with who each individual is and helping them find their potential to make the changes they and their loved ones want, whether behavioral, emotional, mental or spiritual. In addition to common therapy issues, some other issues Steve seeks to help clients with include parenting skills, meditation, personal growth, spirituality, modern social influences, career, identity, self-esteem, relationships, communication and present awareness. His clients can expect support, insight and guidance in identifying and achieving their most important goals.
